Lieutenant Colonel Harrison leaned against his seat and observed his executive officer as he answered Captain Alexander's question. By the time he had finished, Derrick found himself thoroughly impressed with the XO's tactical analysis of the situation, and wholeheartedly agreed with him. It was all of the evidence he needed to determine that the man would make a fine battalion commander someday.
The only discernable oversight in his vision of the tactical situation was the faith he placed in thermal optics. While the technology was as advanced as ever, and often very reliable, the thermals would have a hard time differentiating between human targets and the background thermal signature of the environment. With the heat and humidity in the jungle compacted beneath the dense canopy, there would be too much thermal energy to accurately pick out a ground target. It wouldn't be impossible, but extremely difficult.
However, the inclusion of Vultures for close air support and bait for the enemy was an excellent idea, and he would have to find out if he could incorporate it into the order for the operation. A friendly chat with the ship's CAG, whom conveniently owed him a favor, would be in order. "Thank you, Major," he said with a smile to his right-hand man.
He looked to the others again, his expression reverting back to its usual professional stoicism. "I believe you all have enough to formulate your own orders for this operation. I want to see rough drafts of your orders no later than three days from now. If you have any further questions or suggestions down the line, direct them to the XO and he'll pass them on to me if he believes they merit my attention. And don't forget The Six P's."
Captain Alexander's brow arched with curiosity. "The Six P's, sir?"
"Prior Planning Prevents Piss Poor Performance," he answered with a grin. "Dismissed."
