"Guest Characters: What Are They?"
I have seen some confusion from our members (and to visitors of the site) as to what exactly a "Guest Character" is. It is my hope that this thread will help explain what they are and the role that they play within our RPG. A Guest Character is essentially a character filling some kind of supporting role in the story of our RPG. Unlike the main characters here (i.e. the Marines of Second Platoon), they aren't a full time role.
To put this in terms most people can identify with, think about the shows you watch on television. TV shows have a main cast of characters that are full time roles; they're present in every episode. In every episode, however, there are guest stars -- individuals whom are not a part of the main cast, and come in for a single episode (or sometimes multiple) and fulfil some type of role. It may be a cop walking a beat who encounters a bad guy, or a civilian who witnesses a terrible crime, or perhaps the criminal themselves. Maybe they're a superior of the main characters that shows up from time to time to check up on the characters.
Now, to reverse that, and put it into terms of a role-playing game such as ours, Guest Characters are characters that do not fit into the category of a main character (they are not a part of O-Company's Second Platoon), but still fill some type of vital role. Guest characters can be a very interesting prospects for role-players, and here's why:
Say you stumble upon our RPG (as some do) and take a keen interest in it. Oh, but wait! You have a lot of stuff going on in real life, and there's absolutely no way you could commit to playing a full time character on this site. Most people in that particular situation would be understandably discouraged, because most RPGs do not in any way have a way of catering RP to people who can really only RP part time at best.
Well, there's no reason to be discouraged! We have a solution for you!
Create a guest character. A guest character can almost literally be anything you want. Perhaps you want to be a Pelican pilot that often ferries our heroes into the field of battle! That's perfectly doable, and the beauty of being a Pelican pilot is you only need to post when you're needed. That means you can RP here with us and take part in the story and not have to worry about needing to post all the time because of your super busy schedule!
The opportunities for guest characters are nearly limitless, and you can decide their level of involvement in what goes on in our story. Maybe you want to be an officer or NCO in the command structure of Oscar Company? Or maybe you want to be a pilot? Or perhaps you are some big wig officer with the battalion we are in (ala Major Killinger). These are all roles you can play, and because of the nature of these roles, you don't have to post all the time. Only when you are needed OR during social downtime (such as our intermissions).
Another benefit of guest roles goes to our full time members.
Perhaps you're already a full time member of our RPG playing one of the Marines in Second Platoon. One day, a cool idea for a character pops into your head and you would absolutely LOVE to create and play that character. But, you have a busy life outside the RP and cannot commit to playing another full time character.
No problem! You can create a guest character. Maybe the idea came to you in the midst of a mission, and we're supposed to link up with a UNSC Army platoon and you would love to play one of the soldiers of that platoon. Well, with a guest character, you can!
See? Pretty novel idea, huh?
So, in a nutshell, guest roles are here for those players that either cannot play a full time character for reasons involving time constraints, or for members already here that want to create a second character that doesn't come with a full time commitment (or just to fulfil some kind of fantasy they have, because let's face it, we all have those from time to time.
So there you have it, folks. Guest profiles in a nutshell.
Sincerely,
Durant, M.
