Personality Profile:
D'Angelo is a complex and often misunderstood individual. A self-proclaimed pacifist, his motives for becoming a war journalist are often questioned. His answer to that question is always the same: while he finds violence abhorrent, he realizes that occasionally it is a necessary evil. This has caused many to call him a hypocrite, however he sees himself as nothing less than a wise and educated man.
Extremely forward and confident, he says exactly what he thinks and expresses exactly what he feels without fear of the reprisal of others. Naturally as a side effect he has few friends to speak of, and his family long ago disowned him. It is that honesty and truthfulness that led him into the field of journalism, feeling that there was a terrible lack in the integrity and honesty of the mainstream media.
Ironically, of course, he ended up being hired by a mainstream galactic news organization, and saw a lot of his previous work heavily edited to put a "positive" spin on subjects that he has felt should have been left as they were: gritty and raw, filled with the substance of truth that possessed the tendency to smack one in the jaw with reality.
Outside of work, which has consumed a great deal of his life, he listens to classical music, preferring such ensembles as the London Symphony Orchestra and the famous works of the late-Ludwig von Beethoven. D'Angelo fashions himself quite the wine connossior, possessing a varied collection of fine wines from all over human space in the basement of his two-bedroom condominium.
Lastly, D'Angelo is a vegetarian, citing his belief that the slaughter of animals is wrong, and that he would prefer to limit the amount of deaths he is personally responsible for. He possesses quite the sweet tooth, often seen munching on some form of candied sweet, and has made it a habit to try new sweets from each colony he visits in his line of work.
Physical Description:
D'Angelo is tall and slender, with little to note in the way of muscle. He sports curly obsidian locks of flowy shoulder-length hair and a thick, pristinely groomed beard that stretches a quarter way down his neck. His skin is remarkably tan and nearly silky smooth. He has no scars to note.
His cobalt eyes have been described as portals into his soul, and women often find themselves lost in the intensity of their gaze. He has been told he is very attractive, although he always downplays his appearance, citing that he is average at best. Lastly, D'Angelo walks with a noticeable limp to his gait, a side effect of a car accident he had been involved in from his early teens.
Background:
D'Angelo was born to the well-to-do Bagglio family, whom owned a sizeable estate on the outskirts of Ravenna, New Venice's capital city. Throughout his formative years, D'Angelo was pampered and well taken care of, not to mention provided the best education money could buy. He went to all private schools from kindergarten to high school, and gained quite the reputation for himself as a straight "A" student.
Despite all of the spoils of wealth, D'Angelo somehow managed to remain humble and meek. He abhorred those who let their wealth and influence go to their heads, and always tried to be kind and courteous to everyone he met. Of course, he was also known to be brutally honest, and in a world where everyone tended to be selfish and independent, that did not bode well for his social standing amongst peers.
A bit of a loner, he never quite managed to accumulate more than a handful of people worth the moniker of friends, and while some may have been disappointed about that, he was perfectly content with his small circle. His preference in people were those who were intellectually sound and socially obscure; those who refused to conform to the norms of upperclass society.
Unlike most people whom preferred an attire that broadcasted their exorbitant wealth, such as designer clothing and high-priced suits, D'Angelo's preferences were far more utilitarian by nature. He often showed up to school wearing cargo shorts, a v-neck, and a cargo vest to match the shorts. This choice in style has followed him into his middle years, although he has learned to wear a suit and tie when the occasion calls for it.
D'Angelo graduated high school at the top of his class with honors, and chose to attend the best ivy league school money could afford, the heralded New Venice Academy of Arts. It was there that he decided to enter the field of journalism and spent the next four years studying it intensely. He minored in English Literature and graduated with a bachelor's degree.
Soon after he landed a job with the Venician News Consortium, where he focused on the increased urbanization of the planet, and the effect it was having on the local ecosystem. After three years of the mundane, D'Angelo decided to return to college to earn his Master's in journalism.
Another four years later he had his Master's in his hand, and decided that he wished to take his services elsewhere, as he felt there was no room for advancement at his job. While searching for a job, the news of the fall of Harvest had reached the Inner Colonies, and the announcement of the beginning of the Human-Covenant War was broadcasted across human space.
This sparked an interest in war reporting that had not been present before, and it seemed the Colonial News Network were the first to put boots on the ground to cover the Harvest Campaign. D'Angelo applied for a job with CNN as a war correspondent, and to his surprise, he was accepted. For the next sixteen years he saw himself venture to a slew of different colonies that had been in some way touched by the war. It filled him with a pride and satisfaction he had not felt in his previous ventures as a journalist, which surprised him greatly due to his pacifistic beliefs. He soon learned that while violence was wrong, sometimes it was unavoidable, especially in the case of an alien hegemony that could not be reasoned or bartered with.
Recently, however, despite his initial zeal about his position within CNN, he soon found himself becoming disheartened as his work was often heavily edited or sometimes even discarded outright because the corporate executives believed his work to be too violent or gritty for the eyes of the public. D'Angelo staunchly disagreed with that assertion, putting him at odds with his bosses on numerous occasions. Finally, after an article that he had been writing on the effects of war on the common soldier was tossed out, D'Angelo had had enough. He requested an extended period of leave and decided he would chronicle the war independently from the likes of the major news outlets.
D'Angelo contacted the Public Affairs Office of the UNSC Marine Corps and requested to be assigned to a frontline unit to report on the true happenings of the war, and to personally experience the war from the front of the fight as opposed to the rear of it.
His offer, to his surprise, was approved.
