OOC: This is a story that I started quite a long time ago to help shed some light on Mason's complicated and, at times, tragic history. I will update this as time goes on. I hope you all enjoy.

“It was an incredible adrenaline rush dad!” Joseph’s young voice sounded hollow coming out of the small speaker below the screen display. Isaiah smiled, “I bet it was, son. I was always too skeptical of getting into an egg.” The transmission was on a delay so there was always a short pause in the conversation, between each response. Joseph laughed, “they have a pretty low failure rate. Besides, this is just training - I’ll have to wait to see how they do under fire,” he added with a grin. “I look forward to hearing about it,” Isaiah replied with a grin, forcing himself to hide any sign of fear, “I know you’re going to do your bloodline proud.” Joseph looked off screen for a second and then back, “thanks dad, I gotta get off - there’s ten minutes until lights out and fifteen days and a wake up until I’m an Orbital Drop Shock Trooper!”
Isaiah chuckled, “I’m proud of you son, I’ll talk to you later.”
“Bye.”
Mason turned off the display and rolled back in his chair, away from the metallic desk he was sitting at.
He leaned back and stretched out his legs.
He looked out the window, it was still bright out, and he could make out the wilderness stretching beyond the base perimeter and into the distance.
He was on a UNSC base located on Reach. He was temporarily housed in a billet located near the base entrance. His transfer orders were delayed and he was going on day eleven of being waylaid. His previous unit was being disbanded and he had earned a spot in MEF 9/21/1 as a staff NCO. It would be the first time in his sixteen year career that he would be in a non-combat arms position. He didn’t know how to feel about that. He was a master sergeant now and he enjoyed the extra pay and increased privileges but didn’t care for missing out on the action.
He didn’t want to grow old sitting behind a desk. It made him curious to know how his father, Marvin, handled it - there had to be some point on his path to Sergeant Major that his father realized he wouldn’t be able to directly fight the enemy face to face. Perhaps it was a saddening realization for his father or maybe a relief. It was one of the things Isaiah would never know about his dad. Mason did look forward to getting an opportunity to become a first sergeant and hopefully moving onto climb to the very top as a sergeant major like his father. In due time, he would often think to himself.
