Cruz, Jace (E-7) Gunnery Sergeant
Cruz, Jace (E-7) Gunnery Sergeant
Gunnery Sergeant Jace Cruz is well known on the Vengeance for his ability to get any mission done while keeping the safety of those under his command a top priority. The battlefield appears to be where he is most comfortable; this being said the Gunnery Sergeant makes sure his men are at their peak at all times. He runs them through drills in the ships VR simulator to keep their senses as sharp as possible. He knows there is always a mission to be done and his troops need to be focused when they are on the field. Despite several warnings from other officers the Gunnery Sergeant keeps his M6B sidearm on his person at all times. The man talked the ship’s captain into letting him carry it without breaking protocol. He seems to always be on edge when the Vengeance flies through normal space, as if he is expecting the ship to be boarded. Being an infantry assaultman, the Gunny prefers to use a shotgun as well as his sidearm on missions forgoing rifles altogether.

Side note 1) Gunnery Sergeant Cruz has a darker side that very rarely appears. When enraged, he will toss safety aside in his quest for; justice, vengeance, or bloodlust. There have been reports of him physically assaulting a former Commanding Officer for disrespecting a new Private in his platoon. Olga Hunter

Physical Description: The midnight black hair this salty Marine sports is cut in the traditional Marine High and Tight, but is usually covered by his Kevlar helmet, boonie cover, or cowboy hat. His eyebrows are a jet black over his icy grey eyes that sometimes cause one to feel as if they are peering right through you to find your true motives or character. There is a vertical scar starting at the top his left eyebrow that runs down to his jaw, luckily the knife that caused it missed his eye. If he were allowed to grow out his beard and mustache, they would be red and a golden blonde accordingly.
Jace stands 6’2” and weighs in at 247 pounds. Most of that weight comes from his muscle. Despite being of the average height of most Marines, Jace is stocky and better built than his counter-parts. His body is peppered with scars from Insurgent weaponry and shrapnel. If he’s not in his tactical gear, he’s in his MCCUU [Marine Corps Combat Utility Uniform] with his M6 strapped to his leg.
Background Information: Jace was born on neither an out nor an inner colony. He was born on a colony that was abandoned a few years after it was discovered. Its name was Gallifrey, a planet farther out than the furthest outer colony. It was originally intended to be a new UNSCDF military planet to better protect the outer colonies but the amount of time it took to travel from Gallifrey to Reach was deemed far too long. Gallifrey was a beautiful planet full of many forests untouched by man, winding streams of crystal clear water free from any imperfection, and an oxygen/nitrogen rich atmosphere.
His father was a farmer and his mother a simple woman that worked on the farm as well. This upbringing ensured that the morals and values of human life and hard days’ work were instilled in the growing Marine. By the time he was five years of age he was helping his father plow the fields and shoveling the cattle’s waste out of the barn and into the fields. Every day the boy worked as hard as he could, often coming in long after his pa and sore from the day’s work.
When he was in high school he met the young lady that quickly took his heart and never gave it back. Becky Amos was a fiery redhead that grew up on a farm not too far from Jace. Despite this the two had never met until then. They were quick to date and were inseparable even when they were on the farm. Jace fell deeper in love as Becky worked just as hard as he did. By the time they were 17 they were engaged and loving each other more with each passing day.
Then Jace met a UNSCMC recruiter that brought up all the benefits of joining the military, including on base housing and even paying for the wedding. Jace promptly enlisted. When he broke the news to Becky, she was at first happy, but also mad that he didn’t ask her about her opinion before he jumped into the contract. This led to their first big argument as a couple and neither spoke until Jace got back from Boot Camp. Becky was proud of him for making it through the tough 13 weeks without her moral support. Needless to say they wasted no time in marrying.
Unfortunately for them the Covenant reared their heads and showed themselves to the human race. This meant that Jace had to leave to fight the genocidal aliens.
Throughout the next years Cruz fought in the skies of several colonies piloting a variety of aircraft. Most notably he participated in the Battle of New Constantinople. He singlehandedly shot down 17 banshees, five Spirit drop ships, and 12 Phantom drop ships. However he and his squadron were shot down and had to hold out against several waves of Covenant until a rescue team could arrive. Since they was part of the 27th MEU, the higher ups sent in Oscar Company to rescue the downed pilots.
By the time that Oscar had reached the pilots, the ground was layered in empty shell casings and bodies of the Covenant. His ability to lead his fellow downed pilots helped him earn a promotion from E-5 to E-6 and prompted the man to put in a transfer request from aviation to infantry. His co-pilots weren’t that happy but they had known that he was doing what he was meant to do. Since 2537 he has been with Oscar Company as their Platoon Sergeant given not only his rank but also his experience.
Several years have passed and Staff Sergeant Cruz has proven his worth to the MEU several times over in various operations ranging from the Battle of New Eden to the evacuation of Emerald Cove.
