Personality Profile:
William Skotchdopole is level-headed and rational. He tackles complex problems with practicality, and has developed excellent bedside manner. In a professional capacity, William remains focused on the task at hand and does not deviate unless absolutely necessary to save lives. Some would consider him, when in this professional state-of-mind, difficult to relate to on a personal level as his demeanor does not allow for distractions that could detrimentally effect his performance.
Outside of the "office," however, William Skotchdopole is a fun-loving, down-to-earth kind of guy. He enjoys social activities where he is surrounded by others as he finds it to be an excellent mechanism upon which to cope with the stressors of his every day work life. He'll be the first to suggest something outrageous to do for the sake of having a good time; thus, many from his previous units found him to be an excellent person to take with them to a bar or a party.
This night and day shift in personality has, in the past, brought him under scrutiny from command. Many of his superiors seemed baffled by his antics when off-duty simply because of the way he conducts himself while on duty. Not once has he ever done something whilst on duty that required any sort of disciplinary action. The same could not be said about the "other" William.
Despite his baffling personality quirks, most have accepted that Petty Officer Skotchdopole is an excellent sailor and a well-natured friend. William would have it no other way.
Physical Description
William's boasts a lithe frame thanks to a high metabolism and a toned physique. His dark, burnished hair is short-cropped with no discernable style, as he prefers to keep things simple. Many have described his eyes as copper in hue, and that they shimmer with the glow of youth. William sports no facial hair despite the fact that it is authorized under military regulations, as he finds it to be uncomfortable and prickly.
When in uniform he maintains a prim and proper appearance. His uniform is ironed and pressed, and boasts military creases where appropriate. When in fatigues, he prefers to keep the sleeves rolled up to his biceps. He finds long sleeved clothing too restrictive, and mildly uncomfortable. Thus, when out of uniform, he prefers to wear tee shirts and blue jeans. The only time one would catch him in long sleeves when off duty, he likes to say, is at his funeral.
Background Information
If one were to summarize William Wallace Skotchdopole's life in one word, it would probably be "mediocre." The story of his upbringing boasts no inspiring tales of perseverence over insurmountable odds, or stories of great personal hardship. William's life was, at best, average.
Born in Ankara Regional Hospital to parents Josef and Clarissa, William's early upbringing was fairly typical in comparison with most people. He learned to walk on his own two feet by one and a half years old, and said his first word just shortly before that. When he was old enough to attend school, his teachers described him as a fun, happy child.
To support their child as he grew and needed more and more, his father worked at a factory just twenty minutes away from their home. Thankfully, with their son in school, William only went without his father for two hours each day when he would come home from the elementary school. His mother, on the other hand, worked part time from home, meaning that he always had his parents around with him.
When William struck puberty, the dreaded phase of rebelliousness began as always happens at some point in a child's life. He would sneak out in the evenings to hang out with his friends from school and get himself into a whole slew of shenanigans. By thirteen, he'd lost his virginity, and was working on his third girlfriend since he'd started noticing women as more than just people with slightly different physical traits.
In school, William did well, despite his late night antics that often found him in hot water with his parents. His teachers very often remarked that he was focused, driven, and in generally excellent spirits. His attitude and disposition as school was a polar opposite of his attitude at home, which occasionally caused his parents to wonder if his teachers were referring to the same William.
Nevertheless, he eventually grew out of the rebellious phase and became a bit more manageable for his parents. He still stayed out longer than what he probably should have, but he at least gave his parents the curtesy of letting them know what was going on, and that he was alright. By the time he graduated high school, he was more or less completely independent from his parents.
William initially had no interest in the military, and his reasons for enlisting were not out of some sense of patriotism or duty. He worked a handful of jobs right out of high school and decided they weren't for him. Whilst on the hunt for another job, he happened upon a Navy recruiter. The recruiter promised him that an enlistment in the Navy would mean he could have all the women he wanted and, not to mention, the college benefits.
Naturally, he signed his contract that day.
Fast forward three months later, William Wallace Skotchdopole graduated UCMB Shanghai in Shanghai, China, on Earth, as a Crewman Apprentice. Like most non-rates, he selected to enter the Boatswain Mate field as it offered him the opportunity to serve aboard a ship. He was then assigned to the UNSC Manitoba, where in six months he'd earned qualifications in basic spacemanship, communications watchstander, and boarding party crewmember.
The UNSC Manitoba was stationed out of New Harmony, and was most often out on patrol of the shipping lanes to and from the planet. As a boarding party crewmember, William found himself boarding cargo vessels alongside a team of master-at-arms searching for illegal contraband and ensuring maritime laws were adhered to. There was the occasional threat of piracy in the sector, but overall William found his duties to be extremely dull and woefully monotonous.
Shortly after being promoted to the rank of Crewman, William sought to find something else. Something that would offer a bit more excitement than that of a Boatswain Mate. So he contacted a career recruiter and looked at the list of rates that the Navy had to offer. The only one that stood out to him aside from Special Forces, to which he was in no way qualified for, was the rate of Corpsman.
So he put in his request to change rates, and found himself on a six month waiting list to be sent off to the Hospital Corps "A" School. He finished out his six months as a BM, and then left his unit for Naval Station Diego Garcia on Earth to begin his schooling.
Four months later, William graduated "A" School as a Hospital Corpsman and a Petty Officer Third Class. He was immediately transferred to Reach to serve as a orderly for a naval base hospital, where he went on to acquire ninety hours of On-the-Job Training. After his OJT, and again finding the job somewhat dull in comparison to his expectations, he requested to become a Fleet Marine Force Corpsman.
Only weeks later he was sent to the Field Medical Training Battalion at Camp Esztergom for eight weeks of training to become an FMF Corpsman. There he was put through extensive training in small arms, Marine Corps ranks, organization, and uniforms, and physical fitness.
Upon graduation from FMTB, William found himself assigned to the Battalion Aid Station at Marine Corps Base Saint Rose for additional OJT. After a month of training in the base hospital, early one morning, William's Chief Petty Officer informed him that he was being assigned to Oscar Company, First Battalion, Twelfth Marines.
